and the top of an flag pole. The height of the flag pole is 10 feet larger than the distance from the base of the flag pole to the point where the wire is attached to the ground. What is the height of the flag pole?
x = distance on ground from wire attached to base
y = height of flag pole = (x + 10) ten feet longer than x
now use the pythagorean theorem:
50^2 = (x+10)^2 + x^2
2500 = x^2 + 20x + 100 +x^2
2400 = 2x^2 + 20x
2x^2 + 20x -2400 = 0
2(x^2 + 10x - 1200) = 0
x^2 + 10x - 1200 = 0
(x+40)*(x-30) = 0
x = -40, 30
x cannot be negative, so the length on the ground from wire attachment must be 30 = x
y = x + 10 = 40 = height of flag pole
this can be done much faster if you recognize the pythagorean triple 3,4,5
